Environmental Health

The department inspects a variety of public facilities such as retail food establishments, food vehicles, public recreational pools, body art establishments, and kennels on a routine basis. Food handler training courses are offered (and mandatory to all food establishments) to provide education on food safety techniques that minimize potential food-borne disease outbreaks.

Health Inspectors also respond to citizen complaints related to public health nuisance, food safety, rodent infestations, recreational bathing, noise pollution and childhood lead poisoning investigations.

Childhood Lead Poisoning/Risk Assessment Inspections: Provide information and testing for lead paint on premises of children with elevated blood lead levels when referred by the State Health Department.

Environmental Complaint Surveillance: Air, water, noise, heat, solid waste, & general public health nuisances.

Food Establishment Services:  Food safety & food service inspections, investigate complaints, provide food handling courses for Rahway establishments.

Public Pool/Spa Inspections:  Conduct inspections & complaint investigations. Obtain weekly water quality reports.

Rodent Control: Provide evaluation & advisement to remedy rodent problems. 

Right to Know:  Maintain inventory of all potentially hazardous materials within all City operated facilities.
